February is all about micro goals. This is the complete opposite of how I normally operate, which is to get really excited setting big goals for myself, plan it all out, then not follow through because [insert a million excuses here].

Inspired by several commenters from my Fitness Check-in post, I am going to use February as a baseline for tiny habits that are all about taking care of myself, so I can take care of all the people and stuff in my life.  I even found an email accountability buddy!  You guys are awesome.

Here are my micro goals for February.  I’m tracking them on the Coach.me app (formerly Lift) if you want to cheer me on!  (I really don’t need another app in my life, but the reminders work well for my Obliger nature.

  • Go to bed by 10:30 every night.  (Yes, sigh… even weekends.  The kids wake up just as early and I’m extra cranky if I’m tired.)
  • Exercise for 10 minutes a day.
  • Meditate/pray/journal for 5 minutes a day.
  • Pay a compliment to my husband every day.
  • Hug every family member every day.

I love setting goals, but sometimes I feel like constantly striving for self-improvement makes me lose sight of the good things I have already accomplished.  I decided I should try listing out some of the healthy habits that I have already established, and you know what?  Not too shabby.  Not too shabby, indeed.

  • I take vitamins every day.
  • I wear sunscreen on my face every day.
  • I drink a lot of water.
  • I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables.
  • I read bedtime stories to my kids every night.

It’s the little things, right?  What micro-habits do you practice that make your life great?

  1. Oh I wish I would make myself go to sleep at 10:30. I’ve always been a night owl and even take a 1/2 sleeping pill or melatonin at 8 pm to help me go to bed earlier and am still not going to sleep until 11 or later most nights. your mico goals are great!

  2. Great goals and not overly ambitious – esp 10 minutes a day exercising. That’s what I require of myself and it’s actually helpful for me since I set myself up for success instead of failure. Best of luck keeping up with your goals 🙂 I’m sure you’ll do better than you anticipate hehe. Have a great one Sarah! -Iva

  3. Micro goals are where it’s at for me right now too Sarah! I feel much better about setting my goals to be attainable and seem ‘silly’ but in reality they do help to achieve my big goals! I love the complimenting your husband everyday goal as well as your 5 min of meditation/journaling goal!

  4. I found this app called Grid Diary. It’s free and you can customize it with any questions/thoughts/observations you want. I’ve been using it as a short journal, including using it as a focus for gratitude. It takes 5 minutes or so a day and it’s really been helping me think about all the little parts of my day that make me happy. It might help you with your goal.

I drink a ton of water and I make sure to play with my dogs and have real conversations with both the husband and the child each day. I’m also getting back into the habit of working out every day, too. And then there’s the Vitamin D issue…

  5. Ooh, I could get into micro-goals. Actually, much of my list making is really about micro-goals, right? One of mine would be to write 10 minutes a day. It is 5:13 pm and I haven’t done that yet today…

  6. So adorable you compliment your hubs once a day. Hope he does the same for you! My micro-habits are drinking A LOT more water, not being angry for no reason, speaking more gently, making eye contact with my children, telling them I love them, and not feeling like I *need* to do anything like blog or clean or whatever.

  7. What micro-habits do you practice that make your life great?

At work, I’m awesome with this: I update daily the logs of assignments and mileage that need to be reported monthly. Also, as soon as I’m given an assignment, I put it on my calendar before replying to acknowledge that I received the task.

At home, I confess, it’s my husband’s daily practice of making us breakfast every signle morning that keeps life running smoothly. If I can back on track with emptying the dishwasher and making the bed each morning before I leave, we’ll be golden!
