One Community: June 2014

onecommunity-nonames

One Community is a monthly photo project in which participants photograph their lives and communities with a theme in mind. The theme varies by month. The goal is to both showcase similarities and differences in our communities worldwide – and bring us all closer together in understanding through art.  Kara chose the inspiration words this month: road or trip, float, sprinkler, oasis.

Road trip.  A 14-hour (round trip) road trip over a four-day weekend with a 4 year old and a 10 month old may not sound like too much fun, but with enough snacks, some good music for the radio-challenged areas of Southern Illinois and Indiana, and an iPad loaded up with games and movies, it was totally worth it to get this picture.  (Congrats, honey!)

Float.  I don’t know what you think about when you hear this word, but I haven’t been to Andy’s Custard for a while, and my mind went immediately to a root beer float!  Not the most photogenic thing, I realize in retrospect, but it makes up for its lack of looks with extra deliciousness.  #summerbucketlist (I realize it’s absurd to use a hashtag here, but I kind of love absurdity.  Expect to see this photo again when I post about our summer plans in a few days!)

Sprinkler.  Oops, I accidentally had this one in my mind as “splash” when I planned to try to capture a shot of my sweet boys playing in the bathtub.  I’m pretty sure they’ll be wrestling as soon as Sam is mobile.

wpid-IMG_3240.jpg

Oasis.  Isn’t this pond pretty?  This has been the turn-around point for our evening walk/training wheels bike ride now that the weather has consistently been warm.  We don’t usually call it an oasis though, it’s usually, “Can we walk to the ducks, Mom?”  We stop in the shade and watch the ducks, geese, and swans fish for their dinner, before turning around and heading for home.

One Community: May 2014

One Community is a monthly photo project in which participants photograph their lives and communities with a theme in mind. The theme varies by month. The goal is to both showcase similarities and differences in our communities worldwide – and bring us all closer together in understanding through art.  Sue of No Bad Days chose the inspiration words this month: five, mother, recipe, and remember.

An imagined future conversation with my son: “Remember that time Grandma dressed up as Wonder Woman?  The five of us (you, Baby Sam, Dad, Grandma and I) dressed up and walked the Superhero 5K.  Grandma carried Sam on her back the whole way, and I carried you piggy back for about the last half-mile.  We were a sight to see!  Do you remember?”

(I think it’s safe to say — my mom IS a bonafide superhero.  And possibly the coolest grandma ever.)

Purple spring flowers rise

Happy Monday!  I picked you some flowers…

wpid-IMG_2922.jpg

Not my favorite spring bulbs, but they are definitely purple!

wpid-IMG_2923.jpg

I discovered these tiny flowers (the blooms were about the size of my thumbnail) growing wild in a neighbor’s yard.

wpid-IMG_2925.jpg

This might be stretching the definition of purple a bit, but I love these flowering tulip trees.  They’re all over my neighborhood — I think I might plant one in my yard for Arbor Day.

wpid-IMG_2931.jpg

More tiny “weeds” I spotted on our purple flower walk.  I assume these are mutations of larger grape hyacinths planted somewhere nearby.

wpid-IMG_2929.jpg

And last but not least, some bright redbud blooms.  I love how from a distance, whole branches of the tree look like they’re covered in pinky-purpley fur, but on closer examination it’s hundreds of tiny blooms.

I spotted all of these flowers on a 2-mile loop around my neighborhood that I used for the inaugural spring (double!) stroller walk of 2014.  (Side note: pushing nearly 50 pounds of kids is a workout even though it’s just a walk!)  I hope you enjoyed my purple Ozarks flowers.

What’s your favorite spring flower?  (I love daffodils and tulips.)

One Community: February 2014

One Community is a monthly photo project in which participants photograph their lives and communities with a theme in mind. The theme varies by month. The goal is to both showcase similarities and differences in our communities worldwide – and bring us all closer together in understanding through art.  Kelli chose our words for February: style, heirloom, heartbeat and warmth.

The Rules:  Post one or more photos interpreting the words for the month, and add your blog post to the link-up.  Please include a link back to the link-up post on your One Community post, and take a look at some of the other links and comment on them.  After all, this is all about building community!

Heirloom.  A 70’s-tastic crewel embroidery alphabet made for me by my grandma Skelton when I was a baby.  My mom passed it down to me and I’ve hung it in both of my boys’ nurseries.  It makes me smile every time I see it.

wpid-IMG_7816.jpg

Heartbeat.  My workplace set a goal to get every employee CPR and AED trained this year.  I have to admit, going through that training made me a little nervous, because it means I might actually have to do it someday.  But when they pulled out the baby dummy for us to practice on (chest compressions with your index fingers!) I realized that I needed to stop being a chicken and pay closer attention.

wpid-IMG_2615.jpg

Warmth & Style.  For an Arizona girl to choose the word “warmth” while the rest of us are suffering through the coldest winter we can remember is a little bit evil.  But, on the few warmer days we’ve had, we’ve gotten outside and taken full advantage of it!  And you always get style points for Spider-Man pants, right?  I want to be this self-confident (and comfy) in all of my style choices!

One Community: January 2014

One Community is a monthly photo project in which participants photograph their lives and communities with a theme in mind. The theme varies by month. The goal is to both showcase similarities and differences in our communities worldwide – and bring us all closer together in understanding through art.  Our words for January are: treasure, silver, resolution and winter.

Treasure.  I knit furiously to finish the fourth stocking before Christmas this year (and I made it!)  Even though they’re only a few years old (or brand new!), these are treasured family heirlooms to me.

IMG_2475

Wow… it makes me a little nervous to take such a close-up picture of my fair isle knitting. Thank goodness for blocking!

Silver.  The long, silvery icicles that formed on the corners of our house during our last round of winter storms were really something to see — especially by the warm glow of Christmas lights!

IMG_2245

Resolution.  Yep, gonna get strong this year.  In more ways than one.

IMG_2256

Winter.  We have had SO MUCH SNOW this winter!  I’m sure compared to places like Chicago and all points northward, it’s no big deal, but at one point in December we had 11 inches of snow on the ground.  That is just unheard of in the Ozarks.  The worst part about such unusual weather is that everyone freaks out about having to drive in it.  Even though I actually don’t mind driving in bad weather, the driving experience is still very tense because the traffic moves very slow and everyone’s trying to avoid sliding into one another.
