November goals, and October goals in review

Monthly Goals // Beauty School Dropout

It’s monthly goals time again! I have to tell you, I’m loving just having ONE goal to focus on at a time. I think it’s really helped me make a habit out of some things that I’ve been trying to do regularly for years.  I’ve been following along with Steph’s monthly goal setting challenge, and the theme for October was food.  I set one main goal, don’t eat after 8pm, and a side goal to blog more about food.  I give myself an A on both!

I used the Lift app to track my goal of not eating past 8.  Check these stats out:  (green dots mean I did it!)

Woo hoo!  I’ve gotten to where I’m not craving sugar every night at 9pm anymore, which I consider a major accomplishment.  I eat plenty for dinner, so I know it was just an emotional eating thing — looking for a “reward” for surviving the nightly marathon that is my kids’ bedtime routine.  (Yes, I know that it’s ridiculous, but I don’t know how to make it any faster.)

I did pretty well with food-blogging, too!  One new Cooking School post (Back-Pocket Recipes) and two recipe posts (pumpkin spice steel-cut oats & choose-your-own-adventure enchiladas).  I think I’m going to try to get back in the habit of doing at least one Cooking School a month for a while.

And for November, the theme is getting organized. There are so many things that need organizing in my life.  How to choose…?

After a lot of thought, I finally decided that I should deal with the boxes.  We moved in August, so of course we still have tons of unpacked boxes in the garage and basement.  My goal is to unpack 30 boxes — or one box a day.  I don’t think I’ll run out!

(This barely scratches the surface of all the boxes in various places in our house.  I’m hoping to have lots of good before & after pics to show you next month!)

Just like last month, I also have a little blogging side goal.  I’d like to get a bit more organized so I can write posts in advance and respond to comments in a timely manner.  (Sorry about that, by the way!  I read all my comments and I love hearing from you.  Sometimes I just get distracted before I respond, then a week goes by, then I feel like I’ve missed the chance to respond.  Argh.)

So yay — it’s November!  Let’s get organized.

Do you try to get organized in November so you can relax and enjoy the holidays?  Or do you love the hustle-bustle of last-minute preparations?

  1. I like the one goal a month thing too! It allows one to be focused instead of scattered. Do one thing well instead of a few things badly. Great job on meeting your Oct goal of not eating after 8pm! So simple yet so important for health. You should reward yourself for surviving the evening routine other ways!!!! And yay for new cooking posts! Good luck organizing in Nov (a box a month doesn’t seem so bad) and responding to comments. I sometimes slack in that dept. too!

  2. Lol I’m the same way with comments lately – I think time escapes me these days. Congrats on reaching your goals! I def eat past 8 but I go to bed a bit later, so my rule of thumb is 2 hours before bedtime no food lol I fail most of hte time but eh – I try. 🙂 Best of luck getting organized this month and take care Sarah! -Iva

  3. One goal a month sounds pretty amazing! I can’t seem to ever complete each goal for the month so maybe I should cut it down to 1goal/area of my life (family, life, blog.) I LOVE your organizing goal for this month! I think 1box/day is TOTALLY doable and if you skip a day, do two the next! If you’re on a role, do a couple! You’ll probably realize you don’t even need a lot of the stuff in your boxes if you’ve not needed some of it for a month…meaning you could consign and make some money! Best of luck! It’ll feel so great if by the new year, that part of your home is empty of boxes and you can focus on the new year!

  4. Great job on meeting your October goals! I am always trying to get more organized in all aspects of life and am trying to create some new habits for myself. Good luck with unpacking the boxes. I like the idea of breaking it down into a manageable one per day.

  5. Congratulations on achieving your goals – that “late snacking” thing really is a habit. I often crave sugar at night too — you are in inspiration:) And I can’t think of a better goal for November than getting organized. I wish I lived closer so I could come and help… pretty much nothing seems more fun to me. I just finished helping a client unpack into her house. Getting rid of those boxes is so freeing!! You can do it!

  6. Nice with the one-goal success! Eating no later than 8pm is awesome. I heard it can really do so much, and that we shouldn’t eat for 12 hours before breakfast (so if you eat at 7am, your last meal should be 7pm).

  7. I struggled with eating at night too and I came to the same conclusion. I was eating my stress as soon as the kids were in bed and before they woke up again! It gets better.

Can’t wait to here how your organizing goes. Maybe even some purging 🙂

  8. I think you deserve an A as well for October! I liked your food goal. I’m debating on trying if a month and see how I feel. I like the app. I want to check that out. Moving is hard. I moved twice in three months. That was crazy and hopefully won’t happen again. I like your goal to tackle boxes. It seems never ending, but once it’s done you will great. Good luck. Glad you joined Stephanie and I in the goal challenge!
